Position Overview
We are seeking two Project Coordinators to support the Bottlenecks to Survival and the Salmon-Herring Interactions projects funded through the BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund (ending March 2026).
- About the Bottlenecks to Survival Project: The aim of this project is to explore survival between and across life stages for chinook, coho, and steelhead in the Strait of Georgia using passive integrated transponder technology. Our goal is to identify where and when salmon may be experiencing survival “bottlenecks”, or elevated periods of mortality, and what mechanisms may be causing those bottlenecks. Initiated in the fall of 2020, the project was an ambitious undertaking led by the PSF and BCCF with a broad network of First Nations, government, academic, and community partners.
- About the Salmon-Herring Interactions Project: The objective of this project is to improve understanding of Strait of Georgia herring and their critical role in the salmon food web. It consists of four activities which investigate factors influencing spatiotemporal changes in spawning distribution, juvenile herring availability to juvenile salmon and adult non-migratory herring biomass, and to support First Nations community outreach initiatives on the cultural importance of herring. The project goals are to (1) develop innovative tools and small-vessel approaches to understanding salmon-herring interactions, and (2) to work with First Nations partners to build capacity and provide training and community engagement opportunities. The research team is affiliated with researchers at the University of Victoria, government agencies, First Nations biologists and crews, private consultants, and NGOs.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Project Coordinator’s key responsibilities include:
- Project planning and development – work with Project Manager and team members to develop project goals, timelines, and strategies for completing different phases of the project.
- Team coordination and communication – serve as the primary communication hub for the project, inform and update stakeholders on progress, prepare and facilitate internal and external meetings, develop and edit written communications for the project.
- Logistics and operations support – support the team with fieldwork logistics, including coordination of PSF, project partners, and First Nations field crews, safety management, and equipment management.
- Data and documentation management – support the Project Manager and Data Manager with data storage and organization tasks, communications, report writing, presentation preparation, and budget management tasks.
- Outreach and education – work with Project Manager to organize meetings, workshops, or outreach initiatives to communicate project findings to project partners and the broader public.
- Risk management and problem solving – work with the Project Manager to proactively identify potential conflicts (e.g., team dynamics, operational delays) or risks (e.g., logistical, financial) to the project and work with the team to resolve and/or develop risk management strategies.
Reporting and Supervision
Reporting to and supervised by the Project Manager with oversight by program leads, the Project Coordinator is responsible for undertaking all work identified by them and meeting or exceeding the standard of care set by them.
Requirements
- Experience: Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field, with at least 2 years of experience in coordinating programs (preferably in environmental fields).
- Project Management: Proven ability to coordinate and manage multiple aspects of a science-based program, including fieldwork, workshops, training and reporting. Strong organizational and planning skills with experience in project management tools (e.g., Gantt charts, project management software).
- Marine Science and Field Skills: A solid understanding of marine ecosystems, conservation science, or relevant research areas is beneficial but not required. Willingness to participate in field work around rivers or in marine habitats. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Working with First Nations: Previous experience working collaboratively with First Nations with an understanding of Indigenous cultural values, traditional knowledge, and rights related to marine and coastal resource management.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt messaging to diverse audiences, including Indigenous communities, scientists, and decision makers. Experience preparing reports and visual presentations.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to anticipate and communicate challenges and think critically about solutions.
- Logistical Coordination: Experience managing logistics, including arranging travel, field operations, and handling equipment.
- Financial Management: Familiarity with budgeting, financial tracking, and reporting.
- Teamwork: Commitment to fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and respectful work environment.
- Candidates must own a vehicle and possess a valid BC driver’s license

Location
This is a hybrid role based on Vancouver Island with an option to work from office space in Victoria and Nanaimo. Travel will be required to participate in site visits, workshops, and in-person meetings.
Compensation
The compensation for the Project Coordinator roles includes a base salary and a comprehensive benefits package. The base salary ranges from $55,000 to $65,000 annually, with the final offer determined by qualifications, relevant experience, and job-related skills.
