Organizational Summary

The Pacific Salmon Foundation (PSF) is salmon first, salmon always. We harness the passion and power of people to save and restore Pacific salmon in B.C. and the Yukon. And, we never go it alone, working with Indigenous partners, streamkeepers, government agencies and fellow ENGO’s, the PSF undertakes research, restoration initiatives and leadership in convening all those willing to help recover Pacific salmon. As People for Salmon, we’re here to help ensure sustainable populations of Pacific salmon for generations to come.

Position Overview

The Analyst plays an integral role in the annual development of PSF’s State of Salmon report (www.stateofsalmon.ca). The Analyst will work closely with a small internal team including PSF’s State of Salmon Project Manager, PSF’s Senior Analyst, and the Senior Director, Salmon Programs to update, evolve, and build out PSF’s State of Salmon report. The Analyst will lead the development of new content for the 2026 State of Salmon report that summarizes the current state of knowledge on the primary factors affecting the state of salmon based on a comprehensive literature review. Developing this content will require deep familiarity with the salmon conservation literature and a thorough understanding of fisheries management and the overall Pacific salmon management context. The Analyst will lead PSF’s ongoing efforts to develop and revise report content based on annual assessment outcomes, with the opportunity to also contribute to data analysis and assessments relevant to the State of Salmon report. The Analyst will also monitor, summarize, and report back to senior PSF staff on pre-season, in-season, and post-season Pacific salmon assessments. The Analyst will develop familiarity with the Pacific salmon data landscape in order to lead annual data compilation efforts. This will require establishing, and ideally leveraging, positive working relationships with external data custodians to ensure that PSF’s state of salmon reporting utilizes the best available data.

What You Will Do
  • Undertake literature reviews to characterize and describe the current factors affecting the state of salmon.
  • Develop content summarizing the current state of salmon based on annual data updates and create content for new sections of the report, such as the factors affecting the state of salmon.
  • Monitor, summarize, and report back to senior PSF staff on relevant pre-season, in-season, and post-season stock assessment and fisheries management processes.
  • Establish and maintain close working relationships with data custodians to ensure access to the best available salmon data required to support state of salmon analyses.
  • Compile and synthesize Pacific salmon datasets from a wide variety of data custodians and data sources.
  • Provide input on the ongoing development and visual design of the State of Salmon website.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including metadata for the various data sources.
  • Work with external partners (e.g., DFO, First Nations, academics) to solicit feedback on assessments and work collaboratively to adapt and improve state of salmon assessment methods and approaches.
  • Generate easy-to-understand data products to communicate state of salmon findings including graphs, figures, infographics, briefs, and other visually compelling displays for the purposes of internal and external communications.
  • Work collaboratively with PSF staff on research projects including contributing to literature reviews, analytical support, and writing.
  • Assist with grant development efforts and proposal writing.

What You Bring
  • A graduate degree in fisheries, ecology, biology, natural resource management, or a related field, preferably with a focus in fisheries science and management.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience working with relevant agencies responsible for managing Pacific salmon fisheries (e.g., DFO, Pacific Salmon Commission), of which at least 3 years involve progressive experience analyzing, evaluating, and interpreting Pacific salmon data.
  • Strong understanding of domestic and international salmon management, including experience with Pacific Salmon Treaty related management and stock assessment processes.
  • Experience working with Indigenous organizations on salmon assessment, management, and conservation.
  • Advanced knowledge of Pacific salmon biology, ecology, life cycles, and factors affecting survival, with experience conducting research and literature reviews.
  • Proficiency in applying analytical approaches for characterizing salmon population status and dynamics. Experience using version control (GitHub) and R Markdown/R Shiny an asset, but not required.
  • Demonstrated experience in science communication for diverse audiences, contributing to technical reports, lay reports, and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage technical documentation.
